A large portion of the participation in sport in Australia occurs at a junior level. Much of this involvement occurs through students who participate in a variety of after-school and inter-school activities. These students often carry this past their schooling, and go on to complete further sporting exploits or involvement outside of the school environment.
As such SMA believes it is pivotal for school students to have a basic understanding of sports injury management and prevention, so that they can begin to understand and help manage their own safe involvement in sport and recreation.
The following courses are offered by SMA-SA for school students:
Basic Sports Nutrition
This 1 hour session will cover the following:
- Energy Sources from Food and their relation to sport and exercise
- Sports Drinks vs Water
- Practical meal options for pre- and post-exercise
Cost: $100 (plus GST) per course.
Get SMART
Get SMART is an on-line interactive course ideal for students completing health or physical education subjects at high school.
This non-accredited course is a great introduction to injury prevention & management and includes video footage, case studies, quizzes and advice from the expert.
Get SMART is divided into six modules:
- Warm Up & Cool Down
- Approaches to Injury Prevention
- Immediate Management of Injuries
- Environmental Conditions
- Infectious Diseases & Infection Control
- Medical Conditions
Each module takes approximately 25 minutes to complete either at school or at home.
Cost: $12.50 per person (includes course resources and certificate on completion)
Basic Taping (SISSSPT304A Tape ankles, thumb and fingers)
Basic Taping is a 90 minute practical workshop that will cover the following:
- Why do athletes need to be taped
- Preparing to tape
- Applying taping techniques to the ankle, thumb and fingers
- Removing tape
Cost:
Facilitation cost: $150 (plus GST) per facilitator (1 Facilitator per approximately 25 students)
Tape: $15 per person (if supplied by SMA)
Structure of session:
If you have 75 students this workshop could be run in the following manner:
3 workshops for 25 students with 1 Facilitator at each ($450 plus GST)
2 workshops for 35 - 40 students with 2 Facilitators at each ($425 plus GST)
1 workshop for 75 students with 3 Facilitators at each ($400 plus GST)
Emergency Response Coordinators (ERC) Course
All participants who successfully complete this training will have the minimum competencies required to fulfil the role of an Emergency Response Coordinator at an Australian Football event. This includes the minimum competencies in emergency management procedures and responses, and the assessment and immediate management of severe injuries and life threatening medical emergencies required by at least one person in attendance at all games and training.
Topics to be covered:
- Introduction: The role of the Emergency Response Coordinator
- Emergency planning
- Understanding emergency response priorities and how this relates to on-field assessment of injured participants.
- Concussion Management
- On-field communication
- Transporting injured participants
Total course time is approximately 3 hours (2 double lessons). However if students have completed the Get SMART Course in Year 8 then this will be between 2 – 2.5 hours depending on the size of the group.
Cost: $450 (plus GST) per course (maximum of 20 in the course), if three of more courses are booked in one calendar year the cost per course will be $300 (plus GST).
Illicit Drugs
The Illicit Drugs workshop is conducted in line with the Illicit Drugs courses rolled out by DOHA across National Sporting Organisations. SMA-SA is a delivery agent of this program. This workshop will run for approximately 45 minutes.
Cost: $100 (plus GST) per course (1 Facilitator per approximately 25 – 30 students)
Sports Nutrition (SISSCGP309A Develop nutritional strategies)
This 1-hour session is directly linked with the skill set of SISSCGP309A Develop nutritional strategies and covers the following:
- Nutritional requirements for peak performance
- Nutritional practices to enhance peak performance
- Nutritional deficiencies and eating disorders
Cost: $100 (plus GST) per course (1 Facilitator per approximately 25 – 30 students)
Level 1 Sports Trainers / Certificate III in Sports Trainer
SMA-SA is able to run the Nationally Accredited Level 1 Sports Trainers Course and / or the Certificate III in Sports Trainer in your school.
The length and cost of the course will vary and be dependent upon which units are already being covered within the school program.
